Winter Specials

Ghee, gond and jaggery — the paks Gujarati winters are made of.

From November to February, Gujarati kitchens turn to vasanu — rich winter sweets made with ghee, jaggery, gond and warming spices. Our Adadiya Pak, Masala Pak and Khajur Pak are made in that tradition, in small batches all season.

The vasanu tradition

In Gujarat, and especially in Kutch and Kathiawad, winter is the season of vasanu. As soon as the mornings turn cold, homes start making paks with ghee, jaggery, gond (edible gum), dry fruit and spices like sonth and ganthoda. A small piece with a glass of milk in the morning is a winter habit many of us grew up with, and the paks are traditionally enjoyed for warmth and energy through the cold months.

The classics

  • Adadiya Pak — urad dal flour slow-roasted in ghee with gond, jaggery and spices. A Kutchi and Kathiawadi winter classic, dense and fragrant.
  • Masala Pak — sonth, gond, ganthoda (pipramul), dry fruit, ghee and jaggery; a spiced, deeply traditional winter sweet.
  • Khajur Pak — date and dry-fruit fudge with no added sugar, for those who want a lighter winter sweet.

How we make them

Every batch is made at home in Jamnagar, roasted slowly in ghee the way it has always been done. Because these are seasonal sweets, we make them from around November and keep going until the weather warms up.

Gifting ideas

A winter box for parents and grandparents is one of the most traditional gifts in a Gujarati family. We can also make larger quantities for families who like to stock up for the whole season — just send an enquiry with the amounts you need.

  • Roughly November to February. Adadiya Pak and Masala Pak are seasonal, so send an enquiry and we will confirm the next batch date.
