Raksha Bandhan
A rakhi, a promise, and a box of something sweet.
On Shravan Purnima, sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers’ wrists and the two exchange sweets, gifts and a lot of teasing. A homemade box from DeshÉ says more than a shop-bought one ever could.
Treats for Raksha Bandhan
The day itself
Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Purnima. In the morning, sisters prepare a thali with kumkum, rice, a diya, the rakhi and a sweet. She ties the rakhi, does the tilak, and feeds her brother a bite of mithai; he promises to stand by her and gives her a gift in return. Today the day is just as much about cousins, sisters tying rakhi to each other, and siblings living in different cities.
In coastal Gujarat, the same full moon is also Nariyeli Punam, when fishing communities offer a coconut to the sea before the new season.
Which sweets suit the day
The sweet in the rakhi thali is usually something that is easy to feed by hand and keeps well if it has to travel — a biscuit, a barfi or a ladoo-style bite.
How DeshÉ fits in
- Nanakhatai — crumbly, cardamom-scented and easy to pack; Kesar Pista feels festive, Chocolate Chip wins over younger siblings.
- Khajur Pak — rich date and dry-fruit squares with no added sugar.
- Protein Ball — a no-bake date and nut bite, for the brother who is always at the gym.
Gifting ideas
Pair a small box of nanakhatai with a box of Khajur Pak for the thali, or order matching boxes for all your cousins. If your sibling lives in another city, mention it in your enquiry and we will tell you what packing we can arrange.
Mention the city in your enquiry and we will tell you what we can arrange. Nanakhatai and Khajur Pak travel better than most sweets.
