Holi & Dhuleti
Bonfire on the full moon, colours the morning after.
In Gujarat, Holi is two days: the Holika bonfire on Phagun Purnima, then Dhuleti, the day of colours. Our nanakhatai and date Protein Balls are easy to share with everyone who drops by, colour-stained hands and all.
Treats for Holi & Dhuleti
Holika and Dhuleti
On the evening of Phagun Purnima, each street or society lights a Holi bonfire, remembering Prahlad's faith and the burning of Holika. Families walk around the fire and offer dhani (popped jowar), roasted chana, khajur and coconut — and then share the same as prasad. The next morning is Dhuleti: colours, water, music and a lot of noise on every street.
Food on the day
Because khajur, dhani and chana are part of the Holi offering, dates show up in Gujarati homes all through this week. After a morning of colours, people want something easy to grab — a biscuit with chai, a bite of something sweet, nothing that needs a plate and spoon.
How DeshÉ fits in
- Nanakhatai — a tin of Elaichi or Kesar Pista nanakhatai on the table means every visitor gets something sweet with their chai.
- Protein Ball — made with dates, nuts and seeds, no added sugar and no baking; a nod to the khajur of the Holi offering, and easy to pop in your mouth between rounds of colour.
Gifting ideas
Small boxes for friends you will be playing colours with, or a box to take when visiting family for Dhuleti. A week's notice by enquiry is plenty for Holi.
About a week before Holika Dahan is usually enough for home orders. For larger quantities, give us a little more time.
